Let's Talk About Sidelight Glass Solutions - A Common Question
Often when meeting with new clients in their homes, we get the question about "what should I do with those two windows on either side of my door?" The two panes of glass on either side of a front door are called Sidelights. Sidelights offer lots of light and a big view to the outside, but they also create some pretty big problems at your front door. Privacy is usually the biggest concern as anyone standing on your porch or even sidewalk can often times see right into your home, especially at night. Harsh direct sunlight can also be a problem as it can lead to sun damage on your flooring near the door, and heat can build up very quickly in your entry area. We have a number of different Sidelight Glass Solutions that will allow you to cover those narrow panes of glass, while still keeping the view and light that you want, without sacrificing your privacy when you need it. Here are some very good options for you to consider:
Our Solar Shield Plantation Shutters offer a very highly functional solution for sidelight glass. This is always our first recommendation based on how durable they are when installed right next to your front door. Typically due to the higher traffic in an entry area, it's not uncommon for sidelight products to get a little more abused as people and pets are pulled to look out those windows when someone comes to the door. Shutters hold up very well to pet paws, shoes that get kicked off and hit the louvers, someone leaning into them as they try to put their shoes on, and lots of other types of potential stresses on them. They just do really well under those conditions and stay functional, while looking amazing. Our Shutters also have a frame that surrounds the panel, this creates 100% privacy where other shade and blind solutions leave side gaps that people can still see through at an angle. With the options of Invisible tilt, and Split Tilt, our Shutters allow you to create a privacy line where you like.
Our Solar Shield Honeycomb Shades make a great solution when you need privacy at certain times of the day, but also want full glass at other times. These shades stack nice and tight at the top or bottom of your sidelight windows, giving you the ultimate in privacy and light control. Honeycomb shades also offer very high levels of energy efficiency and make it so the pressing heat and cold are held back out of your space, making your entry area more comfortable and regulated. See the video of these shades in action lower on this page. They really do a great job of creating the exact level of privacy you want throughout the day and assure your home is safe and secure when you need it the most.
Solar Shield Faux Wood Blinds make a good functional solution for sidelight glass when budget is the most important consideration. This is going to be the most cost effective option that is still very functional. Our blinds will still allow you the ability to raise the slats to the top of the window when you want an unobstructed view out, and also tilt your slats closed when you need to add privacy to your entry area. Faux Wood Blinds are easy to dust and wipe down if they get anything splattered on them, like mud from someone's shoes as they kick them off in the entry area. Faux Wood Blinds also come in a decent variety of colors and textures for you to be able to choose the perfect blend for your home.
If the view out of your sidelight glass isn't as important to you as allowing diffused sunlight into your entry, and giving you privacy all day and night, then Frosted Window Film is a great solution. With a large variety of films that range in texture, patterns, and light filtering options there is sure to be a look you love for your home. Window film is a stationary solution, so there is no options to "open" and "close" the material to be able to see out, but this works great when the view isn't really a big priority. Our Design Specialists can help you determine the best solution for your sidelight glass windows as well as help you make selections that will pull your home together!
